# Plans & Billing > Alfred Scholar plans explained: Basic, Plus, Pro, Lab and Enterprise, the 7-day Pro trial, monthly allowances, upgrades, cancellations and refunds. Source: https://www.alfredscholar.com/docs/v1.x/plans-and-billing/ Alfred Scholar has five plans: Basic, Plus, Pro, Lab and Enterprise. Every new account starts with a 7-day Pro trial, free and with no card, and moves to Basic when it ends. This page covers what each plan includes, what it costs, how the monthly allowances work, and how to upgrade, cancel or get a refund. ## Available plans ### 7-day Pro trial Seven days of full Pro access, free, wherever you are. The trial starts on its own when you sign up, and no card is needed. There is one trial per person. When the seven days are up, nothing is charged. You keep everything, and the workspace moves to Basic: your library and citations keep working, with lighter limits on documents and questions. Upgrade whenever you are ready. ### Basic For trying Alfred. Basic is the free plan: a workspace is on it whenever it has no trial or paid plan, for example once the trial ends. No payment or card is needed. - 3 documents - 20 AI messages a month, up to 5 a day - 60 pages processed a month, up to 50 pages per document - Unlimited citations and manuscripts, in every citation style Plagiarism checks, Telescope, Viva Prep, reviews by Alfred, Loops, Second Brain, Zotero and Mendeley sync, peer reviewers and team seats need a paid plan. ### Plus For coursework and early research. - Unlimited documents - 30 AI messages a month - 90 pages processed a month (about 3 papers), up to 150 pages per document - 2 plagiarism checks a month - A weekly Loops digest and Second Brain - Zotero & Mendeley sync - 1 peer reviewer - Bring your own AI key ### Pro For your thesis and serious research. Everything in Plus, and: - 60 AI messages a month - 200 pages processed a month (about 7 papers), up to 300 pages per document - 1 Telescope analysis a month - 1 Viva Prep a month - 1 review by Alfred a month, checking up to 10 cited sources - 5 plagiarism checks a month - 3 peer reviewers - Email support ### Lab For labs and research groups. Everything in Pro, for five people: - 1 PI + 4 researchers (5 seats total) - 250 AI messages a month, shared across the workspace - 1,000 pages processed a month (about 35 papers), up to 500 pages per document - 4 Telescope analyses, 4 Viva Preps and 4 reviews by Alfred a month, each review checking up to 30 cited sources - 25 plagiarism checks a month - A weekly Loop for every member - Unlimited peer reviewers - Shared workspaces with role-based access control - Supervisor review workflow - WhatsApp priority support ### Enterprise For universities, colleges and institutes. Everything in Lab, scaled to your institution, with pricing tailored to it: - Seats scaled to your department or institution - Central billing and purchase orders - Onboarding and training for your team - Priority support with a direct line - Optionally, your own deployment, with allowances set by your agreement Write to hello@alfredscholar.com to talk it through. See [the Enterprise page](/campus/) for how an institution's own deployment works. ### Founding Scholar (closed) The Founding Scholar lifetime edition was a numbered run of 100 seats granting permanent Pro access for a single payment. All 100 seats were claimed and the edition is closed, so it can no longer be bought. If you hold a seat, nothing changes. Your Pro access is permanent, there is no renewal to miss, and your seat number stays on your billing page. ## Pricing Alfred Scholar is sold worldwide. In India, everything is priced in Indian Rupees (INR). Outside India, the paid plans are priced in US dollars. You can switch from monthly to annual billing at any time. INR prices are the full amount charged. Enterprise is priced per agreement. ## Monthly allowances Every allowance resets at the start of each calendar month. A month lets you spend a week deep in a literature review and a quieter week writing, without a daily ceiling cutting off a good afternoon. Citations and manuscripts are unlimited on all plans. ### AI messages Each question you send Alfred counts as one message, however much reading Alfred does to answer it. The allowance is **shared** across every place Alfred does the thinking: chatting in Ask Alfred, Alfred on your other pages, voice dictation, and rewriting or humanising text in a manuscript. A long session on any one of them draws down the same budget. On Lab, the whole workspace shares one allowance. If you regularly need more, connect your own AI key and the message allowance is lifted. ### Pages processed Pages are counted once, when a document is processed: a 30-page paper uses 30 pages of your month. That covers uploads, imports, and papers that arrive through Zotero or Mendeley sync. A document longer than your plan's longest-document limit, or one that would take you past the month's allowance, is not processed, and the document says why so you can choose what to do next: upgrade, or wait for the new month. Nothing already in your library is affected. ## Bring your own key ## Bring your own key If you would rather run AI on your own provider account, the workspace owner can connect an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, or Amazon Bedrock under **Settings** > **AI keys**. This is available on Plus, Pro and Lab, and during the 7-day trial. While a key is active, it powers all of your AI (chat, Telescope, and the writing assists), and the message allowance above stops applying. Pages, Telescope, reviews and plagiarism checks stay on your plan's allowance. Two things always stay on Alfred Scholar's shared engine, key or no key: **embeddings** (document search and grounding) and **originality checks** (plagiarism detection). See [Bring Your Own Key](/docs/v1.x/bring-your-own-key) for the full setup. ## Gift codes A gift code grants a stretch of plan time that you can redeem into your workspace. 1. Go to **Settings** > **Billing**. 2. Enter your **gift code** in the redemption field. 3. Confirm. The plan time is added to your workspace. If you received a code from us or from a colleague, redeeming it is all it takes to activate the access it carries. ## Upgrading your plan You can upgrade your plan at any time: 1. Go to **Settings** > **Billing**. 2. Review your current plan and available upgrades. 3. Click **Upgrade** on the plan you want. 4. Complete the payment (UPI, cards, and net banking accepted). When upgrading, you are charged the new plan at its normal price. Your new plan activates immediately after payment with instant access to the higher plan's features and limits. Available options: - Basic or the trial to Plus, Pro or Lab - Plus to Pro or Lab - Pro to Lab - Monthly to annual billing (same plan) ## Downgrading or cancelling To cancel your subscription: 1. Go to **Settings** > **Billing**. 2. Click **Cancel Subscription**. 3. Confirm the cancellation. After cancelling: - Your paid plan **stays active until the end of your current billing cycle**. You keep full access until the expiration date shown on your billing page. - After the cycle ends, your workspace moves to Basic until you resubscribe. - **Your data is never deleted.** All your documents, manuscripts, citations, and chat history remain in your workspace. - On Basic, its limits apply: for example, uploading more than 3 documents, running a plagiarism check, or syncing Zotero needs a paid plan. > **Note:** There is no direct downgrade, for example from Lab to Pro or Pro to Plus. To switch, cancel your current subscription and subscribe to the smaller plan after it expires. You can resubscribe to any paid plan at any time from the billing settings page. ## Billing cycles Alfred Scholar offers two billing cycles: - **Monthly** - Charged every month on the date you subscribed. - **Annual** - Charged once per year on the date you subscribed. Switching from monthly to annual billing on the same plan is treated as an upgrade and takes effect immediately. ## Checking your usage To see how much of your plan you have used: 1. Go to **Settings** > **Billing**. 2. The **Usage** section shows your current consumption: - **Documents** - How many documents you have out of your plan's limit. - **AI messages this month** - Messages counted against this month's allowance. - **Pages this month** - Pages processed this calendar month. - **Plagiarism checks, Telescope analyses, Viva Preps and reviews by Alfred** - Each counted for this calendar month. ## Frequently asked questions **Can I get a refund?** We offer a full refund within the first 7 days of any paid plan. No questions asked. After that, you can cancel any time and your plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle. **What payment methods are accepted?** We accept UPI, credit cards, debit cards, and net banking. The trial needs none of them: you are only asked to pay when you choose a paid plan. **Do I get a receipt or an invoice?** Yes. Every payment sends an email receipt with the amount, date, and plan, which is what most institutions need for reimbursement. If your finance office needs something in a particular format, write to hello@alfredscholar.com and we will sort it out. **What happens to my data if I cancel?** Nothing. Your documents, manuscripts, citations, and chat history are never deleted. Your workspace moves to Basic, so existing content stays available and Basic's limits apply to anything new. **Can I switch plans mid-cycle?** Upgrades happen immediately, and you are charged the new plan at its normal price going forward. Cancellations take effect at the end of your current billing cycle. **Who owns my data?** You do. Your documents, citations, manuscripts, and all research data belong to you. We never use your data to train AI models. You can download your original files and export citations as BibTeX or RIS, manuscripts as PDF and Telescope tables as CSV.
