# Talk to Alfred

> Click Alfred and talk. He hears you, answers aloud in your own conversation, and can do everything he does in writing. Five short calls a day per workspace to begin with.

Click Alfred, bottom right, and you now have two choices: **Write to Alfred**, as before, or **Talk to Alfred**. Choose the second and you are on a call with him. Say what you need, the way you would to a colleague across the desk, and he answers out loud.

## The same Alfred

Nothing about Alfred changes when you speak to him. It is the same conversation, in the same panel, with the same knowledge of your workspace and the page you are on. What you say and what he answers appear in the panel as the call goes on, so you can read back later. He can look things up, read a paper, [file your library](/changelog/alfred-files-your-library-himself/) as you ask, and lay out anything bigger as a card for you to confirm, exactly as he does in writing. Changes that delete, import or send still wait for a tap.

He speaks the way a person does: short answers, one question at a time, and a quick "let me see" while he looks something up rather than silence.

## On the call

- **Choose your microphone and speaker** from the voice bar if the defaults are not the ones you want. The bar shows you are being heard, and tells you when nothing is coming from the microphone.
- **Mute** and **End** are always there. Closing the panel ends the call too.
- Keep the panel open while you talk: that is where Alfred does his thinking.

## What to expect for now

Voice is new and we are starting it small. Every signed-in member can use it, on tablets and computers where the Alfred panel lives. Each workspace has **five calls a day**, each **up to three minutes**. When a workspace has used its five, Alfred says so and is still there in writing. We will widen this as we learn how it is used.

## Your account stays yours

The call is carried by a separate service that never holds your sign-in. When you start a call, the app gives it a one-time pass that is good for a minute and a half and for one call only. Everything you say is turned into text and answered in your conversation like any other message, with the same permissions your role already has.
