Spelling and grammar used to sit inside the Manuscript check panel, where you could only read the findings as a list. Now it has its own panel and its own switch, and it marks the errors directly in your writing.
What changed
- Errors are underlined in place. A red wavy underline under a misspelling, a quieter one under a grammar note, a lighter one under a suggestion. You see what to look at, where it is, without reading a list.
- One click to fix. Click an underline and the correction is right there. Take it and keep writing.
- Fix a repeated mistake everywhere at once. Spell the same word wrong six times and the panel offers to fix all six together, whenever the correction is the same for each.
- It keeps up as you write. The underlines refresh a moment after you stop typing, so they are never stale, and they never interrupt your typing.
- The underlines stay when you close the panel. Close it to give your page its full width back. The switch inside the panel turns the checking on and off, not whether the panel is open.
- Still on your device, still off by default. Turn it on and it runs entirely in your browser, so your manuscript is never uploaded. One-time download of about 8 MB. For unpublished or embargoed work, that is the whole point.
Why
A list of spelling findings in a sidebar is a list nobody reads. A correction belongs under the word, where you are already looking. This is the one you know from every word processor, so there is nothing new to learn: see the underline, click it, move on.
