# The Reading Room: Alfred Scholar redesigned around the paper in front of you

> A new look for the whole app: a white page, one brand blue, a serif for reading, a phone companion for reading and asking, and fewer things in your way.

The app grew feature by feature, and it showed. Nine colours competed in the sidebar, guided tours fired on every first visit, and a phone got the desktop squeezed to fit. The Reading Room starts again from the thing you actually do here: read a paper, ask it something, write with what you learned.

## What's new

- **One quiet page** - the whole app sits on a white page with stone panels and a single brand blue for anything you can act on. Nothing on the page casts a shadow, labels read in sentence case, and the only colour left over is the amber that marks evidence.
- **A serif for reading** - Alfred's answers, your notes, digests and the paper itself are set in Newsreader at a comfortable measure. Buttons, tables and settings stay in Inter. Code, DOIs and tokens are the only things in a monospace.
- **Page tabs for every citation** - each page Alfred cites is a small tab on the right edge of the paragraph. Click it and the reader scrolls to the page and washes the passage, so checking a claim is one click, not a search.
- **A paper from your field, already open** - tell us what you research when you sign up and a published paper from that field is waiting in your library, with its first question already answered and cited. Your first minute is spent checking a real answer, not looking for a PDF. It does not count against your plan.
- **A first week that pays you back** - five steps that are the real work: see how Alfred cites, read your own paper, save a reference, start a draft and compare papers. Finish all five during your trial and Pro stays on for another week.
- **Your shelf on Home** - the last sixteen weeks of your work as books on a shelf, with four plain figures beside it: papers read, questions asked, references saved, words written. No streaks, no badges.
- **A phone that reads** - on a phone the app is a reading companion: your library, the paper with Ask Alfred as a sheet beneath it, your notes and your digests, with a bottom bar to move between them. Writing stays on a tablet or a computer, and the phone says so instead of shrinking the editor.
- **Lists that keep going** - every list loads more as you scroll. The page-number bars are gone, and so is the space they took on a small screen.
- **Notes that open where you were** - a new note is a page, not a dialog, Save and Cancel stay in reach while you edit a long one, and every note row can be renamed, moved or deleted in place.
- **Settings as a list beside the page** - one list of Account, Security, Workspace and Help beside each page, and Billing opens on what you have built this week before it shows a plan.

## Also changed

- The eight guided tours and the welcome, institution and upgrade pop-ups are gone. The one interruption left is the paywall, and only when the server has actually said no.
- High contrast is no longer a separate theme. Light, Dark and System all meet the contrast floor on their own.
- The Alfred mascot stays, now in the brand blue, wherever Alfred is speaking.

## Why this matters

A research tool should get out of the way of the reading. When the chrome is quiet and the evidence is the only thing in colour, you spend your attention on the paper and on what Alfred found in it, which is the whole point.
