An answer is only as good as the evidence behind it. Citations in chat now render reliably, and following one keeps you where you are.

## What changed

- Citations render consistently. Some answers previously showed raw text such as `[cite:...]` in place of a citation, or showed a citation on one line and plain text on the next. Every citation in an answer now renders as a link you can follow.
- Following a citation opens the source beside your conversation. The chat stays on screen, and the citation you followed stays marked while you read, so you always know which claim you are checking. Closing the source, or pressing your browser's back button, returns you to exactly where you were.
- Sources open on the cited page, with the quoted passage highlighted. Where a citation covers a range of pages, the passage is found anywhere in that range.
- When a quoted passage cannot be located, the source says so and still opens on the cited page. Papers sometimes word a passage differently in the PDF, or hold it inside a figure or table.
- Citations to a page range are labelled as a range, for example "pp. 12-13".

## Elsewhere

If a page runs into trouble, it now explains what happened and offers one clear way back, rather than showing a generic error. After we publish an update, the app tells you a reload is all that is needed.

## What stays the same

You can still open any source in a full page: hold Cmd (or Ctrl) while clicking a citation, or open it from your research library as before.
