## What researchers want from a ChatPDF alternative

If you are looking for a ChatPDF alternative, you probably like the idea of chatting with a PDF but need more from it for research papers. A thesis or a literature review asks for answers you can cite. That means every claim should point to a page you can open and check. This guide compares six tools that let you chat with PDF research papers, and says where each one is stronger than the others.

Facts and prices come from each company's own pages, read in October 2026. Prices change often, so check the pricing page before you pay.

## What ChatPDF does well

[ChatPDF](https://www.chatpdf.com) is one of the simplest ways to chat with a PDF. You drop in a file and start asking questions. No account is needed to try it.

Its answers come with citations. ChatPDF says clicking a citation scrolls to the source in your PDF, and a side-by-side view keeps the answer next to the document. It also handles more than research papers:

- **Many file types:** PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Markdown and text files.
- **Any language:** upload in one language and ask in another.
- **Multi-file chats:** put files in a folder and chat with all of them in one conversation.

The free plan lets you analyze 2 documents a day. ChatPDF Plus is a paid plan with unlimited document analysis.

## Why people look for ChatPDF alternatives

### Research needs more than answers

ChatPDF is a general PDF tool. It is good at answering a question about a document. Research work goes on after the answer: you need to save the reference, format it, and write it into a chapter. ChatPDF's site does not list a reference manager or a manuscript editor.

### Two documents a day is tight for a literature review

A literature review can mean dozens of papers in a week. On the free plan, that limit arrives quickly.

### You want a tool that knows academic sources

Some researchers want to search for papers and chat with them in the same place. Others want their chat history, notes and citations kept together in a research workspace.

## How to test citations when you chat with PDF research papers

Before you pick any tool, run the same short test on each one. Upload two papers you know well and ask three questions:

1. A question whose answer sits on one page. Does the citation take you to that page?
2. A question that needs both papers. Does each claim cite the right paper?
3. A question neither paper answers. Does the tool say so, or does it fill the gap from somewhere else?

The third question matters most for research. An answer that sounds right but has no source in your papers is the one that ends up in a thesis by mistake. Our guide on [how to catch AI hallucinations in research](/blog/how-to-catch-ai-hallucinations-in-research/) covers more checks.

## The ChatPDF alternatives

### 1. Alfred Scholar

[Alfred Scholar](/) is a research workspace for PhD students and academics. Its [chat with PDF research papers](/features/ai-chat/) feature, Ask Alfred, answers only from the papers you upload. Every claim carries a page citation, such as [p.12], and clicking it opens that page in the PDF viewer.

**Best for:** researchers who want to chat with PDF papers and then cite and write from the same answers.

**What it does differently from ChatPDF:**

- Answers come only from your uploaded papers, cited to the page.
- A [citation manager](/features/citation-manager/) with BibTeX and RIS import, DOI lookup and formatted references.
- A [manuscript editor](/features/manuscript-editor/) that inserts citations from your library.
- A [pre-submission plagiarism check](/features/plagiarism-detection/) against open-access research and the public web, on Plus and above.

**Where ChatPDF is better:** Alfred Scholar works with PDFs only, while ChatPDF also reads Word, PowerPoint, Markdown and text files. ChatPDF needs no account to try, and Plus gives unlimited document analysis. Alfred Scholar plans have a monthly page allowance: 60 pages on Basic, 90 on Plus and 200 on Pro.

**Pricing:** every new account starts with a 7-day Pro trial with no card, then moves to a free Basic plan with 3 documents. Alfred Scholar Plus is $12/month or $120/year (₹499/month or ₹4,990/year in India). Pro is $29/month or $290/year (₹1,299/month or ₹12,990/year). Lab is $129/month for 5 seats.

### 2. Humata

[Humata](https://www.humata.ai) is a focused chat-with-documents tool. Each answer cites relevant sections from your uploaded documents, with links back into the source files.

**Best for:** researchers and small teams who want a simple document chat with a clear page allowance.

**What it does differently from ChatPDF:** Humata prices by pages read each month, and its Team plan adds folder and department permissions for up to 10 people.

**Honest limits:** it is a document chat tool, not a research workspace, so references and writing happen elsewhere. The free plan stops at 60 pages.

**Pricing:** free plan with 60 pages. Expert $9.99/month with 500 pages, then $0.02 a page. Team $49 per user a month with 5,000 pages.

See [Alfred Scholar vs Humata](/compare/humata/).

### 3. Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)

[Gemini Notebook](https://notebook.google.com) is Google's AI notebook, renamed from NotebookLM in July 2026. You add sources to a notebook and chat with them. Inline citations show the quoted text, and selecting one opens the source at that passage.

**Best for:** students who want a generous free tier and work with mixed sources.

**What it does differently from ChatPDF:** a notebook holds up to 50 sources on the free tier. It reads PDF, Word, text, Markdown, CSV and PowerPoint files, and it can turn sources into mind maps of topics.

**Honest limits:** there is no reference library, no BibTeX or RIS exchange and no bibliography styling. Citations point to passages in your sources, so you still format references yourself.

**Pricing:** free tier with 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook. Higher limits come with Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra.

See [Alfred Scholar vs Gemini Notebook](/compare/notebooklm/).

### 4. Anara

[Anara](https://anara.com) is an AI research workspace. It answers from your files, papers and web pages, and each answer cites the passage it relied on, so you can verify a claim in one click.

**Best for:** researchers who work with many kinds of material, not only PDFs.

**What it does differently from ChatPDF:** Anara accepts PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, spreadsheets, images, audio, MP4 video and YouTube links. It has an editor where you can insert citations in thousands of styles, and it can extract the same fields from every paper in a folder into a cited table.

**Honest limits:** Anara does not list a plagiarism or originality check. The free plan gives a daily amount of AI use without a stated number.

**Pricing:** free plan. Plus $10 and Pro $20 per seat a month, or $8 and $16 billed yearly.

See [Alfred Scholar vs Anara](/compare/anara/).

### 5. SciSpace

[SciSpace](https://scispace.com) pairs paper search with chat with PDF, a literature review tool, an AI writer and a citation generator.

**Best for:** researchers who start from a search and want to chat with the papers they find.

**What it does differently from ChatPDF:** SciSpace searches over 270 million research papers, so you can find and question papers in one place. Premium includes unlimited chat with PDF.

**Honest limits:** SciSpace runs on monthly credits, 1,200 on Premium, and the number of tools takes time to learn.

**Pricing:** free sign-up. Premium is INR 1,200 a month, or INR 700 a month billed annually, on the pricing page shown in India.

See [Alfred Scholar vs SciSpace](/compare/scispace/).

### 6. Paperpal

[Paperpal](https://paperpal.com) is an academic writing assistant that also lets you chat with PDFs. Its answers come with source links you can verify in the original document.

**Best for:** researchers who want PDF chat and language editing from the same subscription.

**What it does differently from ChatPDF:** chat sits next to grammar editing, citations, a plagiarism check and submission checks, with add-ins for Word, Google Docs and Overleaf.

**Honest limits:** the free plan allows 5 files a month of up to 100 pages each. Prime raises that to 250 files a month of up to 500 pages each.

**Pricing:** free plan. Prime $25/month or $144/year. For a full comparison of writing tools, see our guide to [Paperpal alternatives](/blog/paperpal-alternatives/).

## How to choose a ChatPDF alternative

**If you only need quick answers about one document:** ChatPDF is still a good choice, and it reads more file types than most tools here.

**If you work with many file types:** Gemini Notebook or Anara. Gemini Notebook's free tier holds 50 sources per notebook.

**If you want to find papers and chat with them in one place:** SciSpace.

**If you also need language editing:** Paperpal puts chat next to its editor.

**If you need answers you can cite in a thesis:** Alfred Scholar answers only from your papers, gives a page for every claim, and keeps your citations and manuscript in the same workspace. If you are also comparing search tools, see our guide to [Elicit alternatives](/blog/top-alternatives-to-elicit-for-academic-research/).

Whichever tool you choose, run the three-question test above with your own papers first. A citation is only useful if it takes you to the page that says what the answer claims.
